I was in Sorrento, Italy, planning to drive north to Como, near the Swiss border. I had lived in Como in 1985 and 1986 and I still have friends there. On the way, I was going to pick up a friend who was flying into Rome from Paris the following day.
Instead of taking the Autostrada (Italy’s version of the Interstate system in the U.S.), I chose to leave Sorrento and drive along the west coastal road through Naples to Rome, similar to California’s Highway one: CA1.
It’s generally a scenic route that winds through many small towns along Italy’s west coast, and this drive was no exception. I made a stop in Gaeta, a charming fishing and tourist town with a massive castle, about 60 miles (100 km) north of Naples. After parking the car, I wandered through the old town, capturing photos of things that caught my eye. One of them was the blue door shown below.
