This advertising beauty video of Teodora was shot in a private home in Milan, Italy working with window light and is a series of still photos. I was looking for some photos and while looking I noticed 2 or 3 photos of Teodora together and looked like it might be cool to use them, and others, in a video. This fashion/beauty project was shot in a private home near Atlanta, GA USA. The challenge for me was to limit where the light went in this very small room. By keeping the Lantern close to the model, and using the blackout skirt, I was able to have a lot of light on the model and due to the inverse square rule of light, I was able to keep the rest of the scene relatively dark. This fashion and beauty video of Lilian was shot near Atlanta, GA. By carefully positioning the camera and shooting into the sun, and using a Sunbounce reflector I was able to get this great light.
Hair & makeup: Sav Wood This advertising Beauty project was shot in a private home near Atlanta, GA. On this project I did not know for sure what the light/weather was going to do, which is not uncommon for the hot and humid summer in the southeast USA, so I brought a wide selection of lighting gear: A Sunbounce roller bag with reflectors, silks, boom sticks w/grip heads, a case of Lumedyne strobe gear, 3 1000 & 5 500 watt hot lights, 2 with softboxes, 4 light stands plus several "C" stands, sand bags, 2 full sets of apple boxes, a bag of cameras with 7 lenses, plus a fluid head with CF sticks. In other words, a lot of gear. This fashion lifestyle video of Lashae was shot near Atlanta, GA in an a private home using window light only.
Hair & makeup: Sav Wood These beauty photographs of Gracen, a wonderful, tall, slim & sexy model, were shot near Atlanta, GA in a private home. Hair & makeup: Sav Wood This fashion/beauty project was shot in front of a cement plant. Hair & makeup: Sav Wood This was shot in Milan, Italy at what was a large industrial complex converted into loft spaces. Yana, the model, had arrived in Milan 2 days before from Ukraine. She has been modeling for about a year and has worked in Japan and Taiwan. She is a very accomplished model at age 15 and we were very happy she was available to shoot. Steve, along with his styling and assisting crew, shot this fashion editorial video in Milan, Italy. This location is about one half a mile (800 meters) from the Milano Duomo, the main cathedral. The video was shot both on a tripod and using a Steadicam. Steve had shot 2 other projects in the morning and had scheduled the model used in this project to arrive at 12:30 p.m. But she was about 2½ hours late due to the job she modeled for in the morning running long. The ability for the model to move, project and be 100% "comfortable in her own skin" is paramount in capturing the imagery we were able to get. This was Yana's first project with Steve and he hired her for another project 4 days later. This fashion project was shot in Milan, Italy for Katya Fernandez a fashion accessory designer. This is her new line of Italy silk scarfs printed in Como, Italy, just north of Milan about 30 miles (48KM). We had a perfect day to shoot, blue sky, warm but not hot and a stiff wind that was just what we needed. We put this together in a matter of hours the day before. Emiliano and I were prepping for another shoot for Katya and around 3 p.m. Katya asked if I had time to shoot the next day and I said yes then I suggested Yana, the model because I had just shot with her a few days before on another project and thought she was great. This part of this project was shot in Como, Italy, where I lived in 1985 & 86. Every time I am in Milan, I take at least one day, or part of a day, to go visit Como. I eat in a small restaurant on a piazza that is run by a family along with their 9 room hotel, which I stay at when I want or need to be in Como. Part of this hotel is a private parking garage that is behind 2 large doors. This project was shot at what was a large family farm in Milan, Italy. Steve shoots at this location often and has seen it change over the last 3½ years. "The vegetation is taking over and some of the buildings have collapsed, Steve comments. "In a few more years the farm will all be gone, either through decay or being bulldozed to make room for a warehouse or apartments, kind of sad really." He adds, "It has been laying fallow for several years, slowly deteriorating and now a lot of items, most notably to me are the hand made hand hammered steel frames for the barn windows seems to have been stolen. My guess is they wound up in an antique shop or in someone's home for decoration, they were in fact very cool and I miss them." This fashion editorial project is a mix of video & stills shot close to the main railroad tracks of the main International Train Station in Milan. This part of town is a bit run down with some older buildings with parts of the wall having exposed bricks. This fashion editorial project is a mix of video & stills shot on an abandoned farm just outside of Milan, Italy. The normal challenge of any mixed media project is getting enough still images to choose from & then have enough time to also shoot video. The "Problem" with creating the still images is, I am creating a slice of life at 1/1000 of one second. So eyes can be shut, the mouth could look strange, the hands may not look pretty, the feet might be in transition etc. This is not a real big problem in video This video was shot in an apartment complex near Atlanta, GA. Having the wind helped and was borderline too much. This fashion editorial project is a mix of video & stills shot on an abandoned farm just outside of Milan, Italy. So eyes can be shut, the mouth could look strange, the hands may not look pretty, the feet might be in transition etc. This is not a real big problem in video because I'm not freezing one frame, but shooting 24 frames a second. I eat in a small restaurant on a piazza that is run by a family along with their 9 room hotel, which I stay at when I want or need to be in Como. This fashion editorial style video was shot in Littlerock, CA late in the day using a mix of daylight and artificial light. The artifical light was from a 500 watt lamp that allows one to focus the light either into a spot or a flood, we set this to spot. This look took 24 minutes to shoot both stills and video. Most of the delay was spent setting up the jib. This video was shot to show details in a fine men's shirt. Some of this was through expermientation. I wanted to be able to show details but severly limit what the viewer could see via selective focus. This way they were looking at what I wanted them to see. This beauty project was shot in a hay field in Ball Ground, GA about 20 minutes before sunset. This advertising beauty project was shot in a private home near Atlanta, GA and is shot using natural light. This is the first time this model has ever worked on a video project and it was a big adjustment for her. This fashion and beauty project was shot in Milan, Italy close to sunset in an open field near Linate airport. The only problem were the number of flying insects driving the model to distraction. I shot as quickly as I could. 7 minutes after we started I had shot 230+ still images plus 4 video clips, we were done. This fashion & beauty project was shot in a concrete plant parking lot near Atlanta, GA USA. The advantages are: There is no one around on the weekends, you can drive right to the spot you want to shoot and you have a clear shot to the setting sun. This beauty video of Ashlyn was shot near Atlanta, GA. Almost always, if there is going to be wind, it will be in the wrong direction, e.g., blowing the model's hair from the back of her head, surrounding her face. This was the case in this video. Fortunately in one clip I was able to turn the model so the wind would blow the hair across her face.. gently. There was a clump of wispy clouds that diffused the sun just enough to soften the light. This fashion project was shot in Littlerock, California. The "Rocketship" started life as a belly tank for a jet fighter. It was bought at surplus by a racer who turned it into a race car to run at the Bonneville salt flats in Utah. They fabricated a windshield, cut openings into the tank for the driver and the engine, added a front axle & rear axle and installed a 455 cubic inch (7.45 liters) Oldsmobile engine. The current owner bought the tank as a photographic prop. You can still see the list of sponsors on the side of the tank, Micky Thompson, Engle Cams, Burbank Speed and others. This beauty video of Faith was shot near Atlanta, GA in a private home. Hair & makeup: Sav Wood This advertising beauty video of Frankie was shot in Paris, France in the Marriott Hotel on the Avenue Champs-Elysses. This fashion & beauty video has a mix of stills along with some video, like most of my motion projects. These fashion & beauty images of Annabell, who is one of my favorite models, was shot in in the back seat of an old Cadillac in the California desert about 2 hours out of Los Angeles, USA. It was raining lightly making the dirt on the windows collect in small pools. I really did not have to give Annabell any real directions because she is what we call a "Mover". In addition to moving, because a lot of models don't move or move mechanically, it is also graceful and fluid movement. These are the rare qualities that all great models have. This fashion & beauty project was shot in a concrete plant parking lot near Atlanta. The advantages are there is no one around on the weekends, you can drive right to the spot you want to shoot and you have a clear shot to the setting sun. This advertising Beauty project was shot the Purple Door salon in Atlanta, GA. The light is 100% window light, natural open shade.

This fashion lifestyle video of Lashae was shot near Atlanta, GA in a coffee shop using a huge window for light. This fashion & beauty project was shot while the model was in a car. I positioned the car so the reflection of the trees would show. This Lifestyle still and video project was shot in a park in Atlanta, GA USA.This was shot in Atlanta, GA at an outdoor seating area at Establishment, a restaurant/bar in Colony Square. We booked 12 models, 2 did not show up. However one of the models brought his girl friend, who was also good looking, so we threw her into the group and she did great. An hour and a half later we were done! These lifestyle images & video of children in yellow leaves was shot in Atlanta, Georgia USA. I have been shooting at, under and in this same Ginkgo tree on and off for 23 years late in the fall. This Lifestyle Couple video was shot in Marietta, GA, on a quite side street in an old residential neighborhood. This street is just a wonderful location. This fashion project was shot in Milan, Italy at a restaurant/bar/ice cream shop, Van Bol & Feste, near the center of town. Van Bol started in Naples, Italy in 1890 by a man from Holland. They are now in Milan. A lifestyle video shot in Atlanta, GA. and was shot in a parking lot near Atlanta, GA.

This Industrial Lifestyle video & still project was shot for a client in Doha, Qatar. We shot 9 days over a 10 day period, needing to reshoot due to very dusty conditions. I arrived in the middle of a dust/sand storm and did not get much better. The Red Car was shot for a client wanting a video of his car in action Industrial Lifestyle, Aviation MRO, shot for a FBO in Atlanta, GA Lifestyle, this restaurant was shot in Milan, Italy This was shot for a very well known restaurant client with several restaurants in Milan, Italy. The video shows the historical connection to the original Delbinari, which started as a working class bar or tavern. Directly behind the restaurant is the Porta Genova train station, which is a comuter rail service. In the past the ticketing agents, engineers and conductors would walk across the tracks to have a drink, some food play Bocce Ball, maybe do some boxing (The boxing ring is still there but it now part of the outside dining area) before going home. Industrial Lifestyle, Aviation MRO, shot for a FBO in Atlanta, GA Steve was in Singapore recently for 2 days and at night was able to take some time to shoot a bit of video of the main downtown business area at night. This newborn baby project, Sydney Rose, was shot in a private home. But this story did not start there. In 1993 I got a call from a woman that told me her child wanted to model and the child was 5 years old, (or 6 or 7, I don't remember). At the time I was shooting a lot of stock photography and children were a big part of this for me. My first shoot with the mother of this baby was in Piedmont park in Atlanta, GA on November 12th, 1993 While planning my way to Zingst, Germany, I decided to fly into and spend 2 days in Berlin as I have never been there and I really wanted a couple of days to get over the major part of Jet Lag. The first day was spent wandering around the Nollendorf square (Nollendorfplatz) area as I was unable to sleep due to an air raid siren in the form of a 1 year old child 2 seats away crying, screaming and making a fuss the entire 9 hour flight to Paris. Normally I can tune this out but not this time. So after arriving at the hotel I was hoping to be able to stay awake until at least 10 pm. However by 7 pm I was asleep as I could not function as I had been up for 25 hours plus dealing with the dyhydration that occurs when flying, even drinking a lot of water on the flight, I was out.

Of course I then wake up at 2 am Berlin time as I normally only sleep 5-6 hours per night. So I got my laptop out and worked on files I shot the first day until breakfast was served. After I grabbed my camera bag and left.

I wanted to see the Berlin Wall, or what I should say what is left of it. I looked on the map and found the metro station close to the Wall was the Silesian Gate metro station (U-Bhf Schlesisches Tor). Then a short walk to get to the Wall. When crossing the Oberbaum Bridge (Oberbaumbrücke) I noticed the railing and liked the design. Upon a closer look I decided that it was likely lighted at night and I wanted to return to shoot it at dusk. So I returned early because I liked the metro stations and I wanted to shoot parts of them too.

The first metro station is Nollendorf square (Nollendorfplatz) and 7 stops away is the U-Bhf Schlesisches Tor station which is a really cool structure. So I shot video on the Schlesisches Tor station on the elevated paltform and down at street level before walking to the Oberbaum Bridge (Oberbaumbrücke) to wait until the lights were turned on.

For a sense of scale, the famous TV tower is 2 miles (3.25 KM) from the bridge. This multimedia personal project is a light and shadow study of a date palm's stripped fruit cluster. On some of the video you can see where the dates were attached before being picked. The easiest is in the opening image, on the left, all of the round "buds" are where a date was growing.

I was just outside of Palm Springs, California on a portrait project, shooting both still images as well as video, and one of the locations I used was in a date palm grove. After shooting Ronnie King (a multi Platinum, Oscar and Grammy nominated producer) in his recording studio, we loaded the required gear into the car and drove to the location, the sun was about 30 minutes away from dropping behind a mountain. We got the gear out of the rental car and set up quickly. In addition, Ronnie's publicist wanted three changes of wardrobe, meaning everyone had to hurry.

After the session was over the crew & I dissembled the gear and packed up. After everything was packed and in the car, I performed my "Idiot Check", this is a phrase I use that means after everyone thinks they have packed everything, someone, or several some ones, will walk everywhere we were to be sure we did not leave anything by mistake, this includes any cans or paper we dropped.

When we first arrived I was totally focused on setting up, balancing the sunlight with the strobe light, getting Ronnie on his spot, shooting images quickly and making the necessary wardrobe changes. So I did not have any extra time to do any "sight seeing". On my walk looking for forgotten equipment, I noticed this palm fruit stalk laying on the ground and thought it really looked very cool, so I picked it up, put it into the car and brought it back to LA that night. I had shot a project for a boot manufacturer a few days before and I had an empty boot box left over, so I put the stripped fruit stalk into the box, which went into the suitcase and home it went.

Last thoughts: This was a really fun project. The stalk has interesting shapes and texture. Constructing the holding apparatus allowed this project to be possible in letting me change angles and direction very quickly.

I am very glad in the pandemonium of the set up, the shoot and the pack up process, this stalk was not stepped on! All of these images were taken around 5 PM in mid July. I had left Denver, Colorado on my way to a ranch just outside Woodward, Oklahoma to shoot with Bobbie, a cowgirl I had met 5 years previous & could never get my travel plans to get back to Woodward at a proper time of day to shoot with her. So while passing through Minneola, Kansas I noticed 3 old grain elevators off to my left. I thought I really would like to shoot them but it was getting late plus I had another 2 hours driving time before I got to Woodward. Knowing I wanted to scout at Bobbie's a while to locate the right spot to work and then get Bobbie & me back on site and still have time to shoot, I decided to press on.

I had driven past the elevators & I knew that I would not be real happy if I did not stop & shoot. So I turned the car around & grabbed a camera & shot 170+ photos on 2 of the 3 old elevators for 17.5 furious minutes - literally running from one spot to the next. These images are of the structure I found to be the most interesting, Bunge, Gano Grain Division.

2 years later I went back to shoot some more... and they are all gone, bulldozed & hauled off. I am really glad I stopped when I did. The Eiffel Tower is an icon of Western civilization and is instantly recognizable in most of the world. I was in Paris in late January for a fashion & beauty project and at night, Emiliano, my European assistant & I set out to "Play"! The small twinkling lights on the tower start "Twinkling" at night on the hour and last 5 minutes, so you have to find where you want to be and be set up & ready to go. Then you have another 55 minutes to find another spot and shoot, then another. In the middle we ducked into a cafe for coffee or tea and to warm ourselves up. We shot for 4 nights in the cold, wind and rain and got some cool imagery for our efforts. Even though I have lived in Paris 3 different times, I never tire of being there. This series of Aviation imagery, stills and video, was shot over 2 different days, both in late afternoon. The still images not taken in the water, were shot inside the hangar with the aircraft positioned just out of the direct sunlight, allowing Steve to use the sky as a giant soft light source. When the sun started to get too close, Steve just pushed the plane back into the hangar a bit. "Stazione Centrale" (Central Station) is the main international train station in the heart of Milan, to me it is a stunning architectural structure and is a juxtaposition in that it is mostly masculine in showing massive strength but parts of it are feminine in the curves and arches of it's steel skeleton. I was invited by the organizers of the photo festival to teach about light and the use and and control of the same to 2 groups of photographers, amateur as well as professional over 2 days. What I shot was part of the opening of this event. I was invited to Oberstdorf, which is the southernmost point of Germany, in September of 2013, as part of a meeting and get to know each other. I also took photos of another event where they bring the cows off of the high mountain pastures to separate the cows to go with their owners to their winter quarters, the barn. The photos here were from the event that was in June 2014 and was very warm that day, unusually warm for Germany, 95° (35° C). At the top of the mountain it was about 65°-70° (18°-21°), so delightful. I was in Phoenix for a project in late February and had an "extra" day before flying back to Atlanta. On this day it started out a rainy and dreary day and I had planned to stay in the hotel room to work on the imagery I had shot for my client the day I arrived and the next day, which I did start on. Mid morning I checked the weather, something as an image maker I do out of habit, and noticed the forecast had changed from the night before and it looked like in the late afternoon I would have a 2 hour window of no rain with a chance of the clouds thinning to what might be a stunning sunset. So I stopped working on my client's project, packed the gear I would want and piled it by the door then went back working on my client project. In the afternoon I moved the gear into the rental car and drove to the location. This is a video made from thousands of still photos, something called "Timelapse" where you attach a still camera onto a tripod and then shoot photos over a set amount of time, like one a second or one every 10 seconds etc. After you shoot the photos you make an image sequence and drop that into a video editing application. I was flying from New York to Atlanta after shooting a project with an actor in the city. When I booked the flight I selected a 5:00 pm departure knowing at that time of year it would be close to sunset, so I might get some really pretty light to shoot photographs & video from the plane. Uncharacteristically I had selected a window seat so I could take photos and video out of the window, typically I only book an exit row aisle seat. However I was bumped up to first class (thank you Delta) 5 days before the flight which is great because the wing causes issues for me in the photo or video. As soon as I got the upgrade I selected a window seat because my Delta profile says aisle only. This personal project was shot on two different days. I hopped onto a bus in Maiori, Italy, on the Amalfi Coast, to meet my business partner in Salerno, Italy. Just inside the city limits of Salerno, I briefly saw this old boat out of the bus window. I got off the bus, picked up the rental car, went to some meetings and on the way back to the hotel, in Maiori, drove into the port, by now it was very late in the day, about 8:00 p.m. (20:00). In driving to the boat there was a gate and it looked like it was locked. I got out of the car and saw the lock was closed, but the chain was not locked. So I unwrapped the chain & lock then opened the gate. I then was able to drive close to the boat. I jumped out of the car, & furiously shot 100+ images in 9 minutes, then the light was gone. I closed the gate, re-wrapped the chain and drove back to Maiori. 2 days later I drove back to Salerno in the morning & shot 300+ images in about 25 minutes. This windmill video is a collection of clips shot outside of Ft Supply, Oklahoma, on a cold January day starting at predawn to just after sunrise. This project was shot in about 2 hours in the Princeton area of South Miami, Florida. I was on my way to a shoot in the keys, when I saw this location. A couple of days later I drove back & shot 200+ images. I knew this was going to be pretty cool but not until I thought to show what can be done with color images then converting them to B&W did I realize the full potential. How I shot it!
How I Shot It! While in Cologne for Photokina, I shot a couple of advertising images for Alan Michael USA, a client in Beverly Hills, California. I had shot with Esther 2 years earlier while giving a presentation on Guido Karp's "Leading Photographers of the World" stage at Photokina. I knew I wanted to shoot at the train station and had e-mailed Esther about the shoot and she agreed to meet. This fashion image was shot in Cologne, Germany during Photokina, the world's largest camera show where 190,000 people attend. This was shot about 50 minutes after sunset so we had some skylight, but not a lot of it. How I Shot It! This BTS fashion video was shot in Mialn, Italy. How I Shot It! This was part of a fashion editorial shot of a magazine. The way I lit the model for this part was having LED lights and strobe inside the softbox and had one of my assistants walk with us as we crossed the street. As you can see the softbox encroached several times but I only needed 7 seconds of video total and we shot over 45 seconds, so I knew I was covered. How I Shot It! This fashion image was shot in an old and all but abandoned farm in Milan, Italy. The farm is one of my favorite locations to shoot and I do not know how much longer it will be around. Sooner or later it will be destroyed and condos built in it's place. How I Shot It! The farm is one of my favorite locations to shoot and I do not know how much longer it will be around. We went here to shoot because it started to rain and I remembered this location. This used to be part of the road that runs around the lake. As you can see it is narrow and some times a bus going one way met a big truck driving the other way and both would not fit at the same time, causing a huge traffic mess. I know this because I have sat in several of them living in Como and driving in the country side. Fortunately they dug a very large and wide tunnel and this was not needed so it is now closed on one end so only bicycles or foot traffic is permitted to pass through. This fashion image was shot in Zingst, Germany during a photo festival. From Steve's first test shot until he said to pack up, he shot 68 images in 11½ minutes. Most of this time was in setting up and adjusting the lights and finding exactly where he wanted the camera to be. How I Shot It! How I Shot It! Steve was hired to teach photo workshops in Zingst at the photo festival they have every June. While there he decided to shoot portraits on the Mayor, and other prominent people in town. Steve has been shooting in this location for years so he knew what to bring and what to expect. The "Problems" with this location were: The constant wind, the cold temperate and the mayor's inexperience bring in front of the camera. How I Shot It! How I Shot It!The farm is one of my favorite locations to shoot and I do not know how much longer it will be around. MOV vs. RAW Recently I shot a still fashion project in Blevio, Italy on Lake Como. As I normally do when shooting a fashion project, I will also shoot a bit of video so the clients will have additional options. I deliver the stills to the client and offer the video as an added value that they can license for an additional fee if they wish. High ISO Test. This is a test where using the same 5D MKIII camera, the same 200mm f2 lens, the same scene, on the same night and using 25,600 ISO shooting Magic Lantern RAW, I almost eliminated all of the apparent noise just by over exposing by two stops then correcting for the over exposure in post. I say "Apparent noise" because the noise is still there, it is just hard to see.
