About the image

This on location Fashion photograph was shot in Milan, Italy 1 or 2 blocks over from Via Tortona, a major fashion and model agency street.

I used a battery powered strobe to add some Pop to the model and to the garment. Also by using a strobe I was able to get the correct color on the garment. If I had used just the low pressure sodium streetlights, the garment would be impossible or almost impossible to get to the right color. The strobes I use are professional, meaning the strobe color does not shift, it is a constant color.

Fashion clients expect to be able to reproduce colors exactly. In the real world, we can match or get really close, but some colors are tough.

I did not shoot a BTS (Behind The Scenes) image on this but the shot before this one is using the same gear, I just moved it to the other side of the street and about 20 feet up the street to shoot this image. The BTS photo is below.

For Photographers

The Gear:
Canon digital camera set to 1/40 of a second shutter speed, 8000 ISO and a Canon 85mm lens set to f2.8.

The reason the ISO is so high is I wanted to show the scene using the ambient light: The street lights, headlights and building lights.

Using the strobe permitted me to get the model and the fashion the correct color, something most fashion clients want. If I did not use the strobe, then the entire scene, including the model, would have been a deep gold color from the high pressure sodium lights that are economical to use, but have huge parts of the color spectrum missing, like blue and green. In other words, ugly.

The Light:
Lumedyne battery powered strobe using a FourSquare "Travel" softbox with a Lighttools 40° grid on the front and ambient. See below for BTS.
