In all lifestyle images, it is very important to get believable imagery. This 100% comes from the talent used in the images. If at anytime one, or more, of the people are just standing and giving a blank look, the image looks staged and fake. The moment that these 2 people are experiencing in the photo above is a real emotion, and it looks like it. I encourage my talent to have fun, to talk to each other vs. talk at each other. Anything I can do to get to a real moment, I will do. This points out the importance of casting. Obviously this project does not need “Fashion Models”, but “Real people”. We did use actors or commercial models, but I did not need glamour, exceedingly good looks nor perfect well toned bodies. Sometimes we will use the employees of the business and get a great result. If I ask an employee to be a model, I tell them: “I want you to just be yourself, do not try to model.” I then ask them what do they do. They tell or show me what they do and I'll pick one action, set up the light, then ask them to “Do what you do.” My success rate is good in doing this. Are there some people better at this than others? You bet. If I happen to pick a person that just can't relax and be themselves, I shoot more images that I want and then tell them: “OK, we got it, thank you.” I then tell my client we need someone else to redo the scene.

The Gear: Canon digital camera set to 1/160 of a second shutter speed, 200 ISO and a Canon 70-200mm zoom lens using 115mm set to f5.6.

The Light: Dynalight strobes, Chimera soft boxes.

We are based in Atlanta, Georgia and Los Angeles, California, both in the USA & Milan, Italy, and serve the nation and travel worldwide for projects, both video and stills. On average we travel 175 days a year from all over the USA, to Singapore to Japan, Europe and the Middle East. We are normally in Europe 2 or 3 times a year, mostly Italy and Germany, shooting for clients there.
